OVERVIEW

Iron Boy is a hand-painted French animated film about an 11-year-old farm boy who can’t stop falling over, braced in an iron corset that straightens his body but narrows his world. Distant from his father, he finds pleasure in music and a new friend named Clara, who pulls him toward mischief.

BACKGROUND

The film is deeply personal for director Louis Clichy, a former Pixar animator who worked on WALL-E and Up and then co-directed two films in the Astérix franchise with Alexandre Astier. He tried to keep Iron Boy from becoming a straight autobiography, even though, like his protagonist, he grew up on a farm in the Beauce and had to wear a corset as a boy. To his surprise, the moment he showed the work to his parents, his whole family recognized how close the final characters had landed to their real-life counterparts. Iron Boy premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, a festival that keeps widening its doors to animation.

THE REVIEW

Few things this year will be as gentle and heartwarming as this film. Clichy’s work is aesthetically beautiful in its simplicity, and the development of his main character is incredibly poignant. Trying to find his place in the world, Christophe ends up learning a lot on his journey about how that world actually works.

One thing Clichy does extremely well is keep Christophe from becoming a typical Disney hero. In an American animation, it would be very easy for the film to fall into “the parents are the villains and the boy is perfect, a victim of the universe.” Here we have a main character who, like many children his age, is immature, and makes mistakes that make it impossible for the audience to stay on his side. His father needs to learn to see him, but he also needs to learn to see his father’s side.

Every second is full of humor and charm, and, like the other strong animation of the festival, Tangles, there are more abstract scenes that capture the character’s mind with great creativity. The short runtime is well used, and by the end, it is impossible not to smile.

FINAL THOUGHTS

In the end, Iron Boy is a sweet film that, despite telling a relatively simple story, rises through how authentic its characters are. Not to say how beautiful and refreshing its hand-painted animation is. I didn’t shed tears, but I’m sure many will.
