FESTIVAL REVIEW

The 2026 South Korean animated film Long Long Night is a touching adventure that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. It tells the story of Norden, the last rhino of his kind, who forms an unexpected friendship with a young penguin hatched from an abandoned egg. Together, they embark on a journey toward the ocean, growing closer with every step as they face the dangers of the natural world and find comfort in each other’s company.

What makes their journey so touching is how naturally their friendship develops, as two very different animals gradually become family to each other. Through their small interactions and growing affection, the film makes it easy to become emotionally invested in their relationship and everything they experience together.

Although animated, Long Long Night often feels close to a live-action film, especially in its camerawork and attention to detail. The animals look remarkably realistic, while the landscapes are so beautifully rendered that you wish you could visit some of these places yourself.

But the film’s greatest strength is the way it explores profound emotions such as grief, loneliness, and the difficulty of moving forward when everyone you love has been taken from you. It approaches these difficult themes with maturity but also with a hopeful perspective. There is also the important subject of human greed and its devastating impact on nature. At times, the film almost feels like a wildlife documentary, but the freedom of animation allows the director to bring an even greater emotional dimension to the animals and their surroundings, making the choice of medium particularly rewarding.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Long Long Night combines beautiful animation with a moving exploration of grief, friendship, and hope, making it a film that audiences of all ages can appreciate. Children will enjoy the adventure, while older audiences will find plenty to reflect on as they follow this emotional and inspiring journey.
